What is flanging/stub ends?

Flanging refers to the forming method of forming a straight wall or flange with a certain angle along the closed or unclosed curve edge on the flat or curved part of the blank by using the role of the mold. Flanging is a kind of stamping process. There are many kinds of flanging, and the classification methods are also different. According to the deformation properties, it can be divided into extended flanging and compression flanging.

When the flanging line is a straight line, the flanging deformation will turn into bending, so it can also be said that bending is a special form of flanging. However, the deformation of the blank during bending is limited to the fillet part of the bending curve, while the fillet part and the edge part of the blank during flanging are deformation areas, so the flanging deformation is much more complex than the bending deformation. Three-dimensional parts with complex shape and good rigidity can be processed by flanging method, and the parts that are assembled with other product parts can be made on the stamping parts, such as the flanging of passenger car middle wall panel of locomotive and vehicle, the flanging of passenger car pedal door pressing iron, the flanging of car outer door panel, the flanging of motorcycle oil tank, the flanging of metal plate small threaded hole, etc. Flanging can replace the deep drawing process of some complex parts and improve the plastic fluidity of materials to avoid cracking or wrinkling. Replacing the method of pulling before cutting to make bottomless parts can reduce the processing times and save materials.

Flanging process
Generally, the flanging process is the last processing process for forming the contour shape or solid shape of the stamping part. The flanging part is mainly used for the connection between stamping parts (welding, riveting, bonding, etc.), and some flanging is the requirement of product streamline or aesthetics.

The flanging stamping direction is not necessarily consistent with the movement direction of the press slider, so the flanging process should first consider the position of the flanging blank in the mold. The correct flanging direction should provide the most favorable conditions for flanging deformation, so that the movement direction of the punch or die is perpendicular to the flanging contour surface, so as to reduce the lateral pressure and stabilize the position of the flanging part in the flanging die.

According to the different flanging directions, it can be divided into vertical flanging, horizontal flanging and inclined flanging. The vertical flanging, the opening of the trimming piece is upward, the forming is stable, and the positioning is convenient. The air pressure pad can also be used to press the material, which should be used as far as possible if conditions permit. In addition, according to the number of flanging faces, it can be divided into single-sided flanging, multi-sided flanging, and closed curve flanging. According to the deformation properties of the blank in the flanging process, it can be divided into extended screen curve flanging, extended surface flanging, compressed plane curve flanging and compressed surface flanging.
