Differences, advantages and disadvantages between carbon steel and stainless steel.

As we all know, there are many kinds of steel on the market at present, such as carbon steel and stainless steel, which are common to us, and their shapes are relatively similar, which makes many people unable to distinguish.

What is the difference between carbon steel and stainless steel?

1. Different appearance
Stainless steel is composed of chromium, nickel and other metals, so the appearance of stainless steel is silvery, smooth and has very good gloss. Carbon steel is composed of carbon and iron alloy, so the color of carbon steel is gray, and the surface is more rough than stainless steel.
2. Different corrosion resistance
Both carbon steel and stainless steel contain iron. We all know that iron will slowly oxidize when exposed to the environment, resulting in surface rust. But if chromium is added to stainless steel, it will combine with oxygen more than iron. As long as chromium is on oxygen, it will form a chromium oxide layer, which can directly protect the steel from degradation and corrosion. The chromium content of carbon steel will also be lower, so a small amount of chromium can not form chromium oxide layer, so the corrosion resistance of stainless steel will be better than that of carbon steel.
3. Different wear resistance
Carbon steel will be harder than stainless steel, but it will be heavier and less plastic. Therefore, in terms of wear resistance, its carbon steel is far more wear-resistant than stainless steel.
4. Different prices
In the process of making stainless steel, a certain amount of other alloys must be added, but carbon steel is completely different from adding a large number of other alloys, so the price of stainless steel is far more expensive than carbon steel.
5. Different ductility
The ductility of stainless steel will be better than that of carbon steel, mainly because the nickel content in stainless steel is relatively high, and the ductility of these elements is also better, so the ductility of stainless steel will also be better. Carbon steel contains less nickel, which can be directly ignored, but has poor ductility.

Advantages and disadvantages of stainless steel and carbon steel.

1. In terms of hardness, carbon steel is harder than stainless steel. In terms of use, stainless steel will be more durable.

2. Stainless steel is widely used in family life. It can be used as kitchen countertop, cabinet door, etc. But it is not suitable for food. Stainless steel will produce toxic reaction when heated.

3. The price of carbon steel is lower than that of stainless steel, and it is also easier to manufacture, but its disadvantage is that carbon steel will become brittle at low temperatures, and it is easy to lose its magnetic force under magnetic induction.
